In February 2024, I participated as a STEM mentor in the Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) Garissa Outreach Program, where I had the privilege of working with a group of differently abled students. My focus was on introducing them to the Internet of Things (IoT) and demonstrating how technology can be leveraged to create impactful solutions to everyday challenges. During the session, we explored practical ways IoT can automate tasks—ranging from simple home automation ideas to assistive technologies that can directly improve accessibility and independence for people with disabilities. The students engaged actively, asking insightful questions and brainstorming how these tools could be applied in their own lives and communities. This mentorship was not just about teaching technical concepts, but also about inspiring the students to see themselves as innovators capable of shaping their own futures. By tailoring the discussion to their unique perspectives, we highlighted how inclusivity in STEM creates room for diverse problem-solving approaches and community-driven innovation. The experience reaffirmed the importance of providing equal opportunities in science and technology, ensuring that differently abled learners are not left behind but are instead empowered to be at the forefront of solving challenges that matter to them.

In Nairobi, during an outreach session at Alliance Girls, I led an interactive mentorship program focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the transformative opportunities it offers. The session emphasized how mastering AI tools and concepts can empower students to develop in-demand technical skills and become proactive problem-solvers. I introduced the students to foundational AI concepts, such as machine learning, neural networks, and how AI systems learn from data. We explored real-world use cases—from automating routine tasks to crafting AI-driven solutions that can address community challenges. Hands-on discussions encouraged students to brainstorm ways AI might benefit their own lives and local issues, ensuring relevance and engagement. I also highlighted the ethical and societal aspects of AI, including bias, fairness, and responsible innovation. By showcasing accessible AI platforms and tools, I aimed to demystify the technology and inspire students to apply AI creatively in their projects and future studies. This mentorship went beyond theory—it was about cultivating a mindset where students see AI not only as a complex technology but as a tool they can wield to unlock new learning pathways and lead change in their communities.
